Team member in profile: Matthew Smith

I joined Corval Avenue in February 2024 to lead the origination team. I am an experienced real estate debt specialist and my key responsibilities are deal origination, structuring, negotiation, execution and relationship management.

After completing a Bachelor of Commerce at UNSW, I commenced my career at Westpac in 2006 and specialised in property finance there until 2021 when I jumped across to the non-bank commercial real estate sector with Maxcap Group.

I have worked with a broad range of clients from private groups to institutional borrowers across the residential, hotel, commercial and industrial sectors. I have also worked with a wide cross section of investors helping to syndicate and manage transactions where the investors range from small private investors to large institutions including some of Australia’s largest superannuation funds. Whether working with borrowers or lenders, success comes down to building strong relationships, having a thorough understanding of the underlying transaction and maintaining consistent communication.

The non-bank space is fast paced so lenders need to be able to quickly assess transactions so the borrower can then make an informed, confident choice of their preferred lender. Understanding the real estate and the borrower comes first so asking the right questions upfront in the initial due diligence period is critical for me to structure a deal appropriately. I keep in touch with borrowers regularly and having these open lines of communication ensures a quality experience through to financial close and beyond.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and children. Having three young boys means my weekends are spent outdoors – camping, fishing, ocean swimming and playing a variety of sports.
